Macbook Pro, Wordpress 2.5, and A New Design

I know it’s been quite a while since my last post, but there’s been a lot of changes around here recently. First and foremost, I bought myself a new laptop. I had previously been using the coveted 12″ G4 Powerbook. It lasted me just under 3 years, and was a great machine, in the perfect mobile form factor. However, I decided that it was time to make my entrance in the world of Intel Macs. So I went out and got myself a brand new 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro. The complete specs are as follows:

  • 2.4 GHz Intel “Penryn” processor
  • 15.4″ glossy display
  • 2 GB memory
  • 200 GB hard drive
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Multi-touch trackpad
  • Built-in iSight camera

I’ve also got a Timbuk2 Commute bag on order, and within the next few weeks I’ll probably be maxing out the ram to 4 GB as well. I plan on running Linux and Windows within virtual machines, so the extra ram will definitely come in handy. Once I’ve had a little more time with the machine, I’ll write up a more thorough review.

I also recently made the decision to start running this site off of Wordpress trunk. I realize that trunk can at times be buggy, but I’m really digging WP 2.5, and I didn’t want to wait for the official release. As well, part of me just likes the idea of running on bleeding edge software. So far, I’m really impressed with the new admin interface. The WYSIWYG editor seems to be less buggy than in 2.3, although I also just upgraded to Safari 3.1, so that might have helped as well.

Finally, I decided to use yet another new Wordpress theme. I would probably stick with the same theme for longer if Smashing Magazine would quit posting about all these new beautiful themes they found. So I decided to go with a theme called textback. The code turned out to be a little too messy for my liking, so I ended up just using the design as a reference and coding the theme from scratch. I think it turned out rather well. Although until I get Windows installed on VMWare Fusion, I won’t know how it looks in IE. It might be a total disaster, but I probably won’t care enough to fix it. IE7 was a big step up from IE6, but IE8 is supposedly going to be much more standards compliant, so that will be a welcome addition to the browser lineup.

Anyways, I think that’s all the news I have for now. Like I said, after I’ve logged some more time with my new MBP, I’ll post a more detailed review. Although I will say this, if any of you are considering buying one of the new MBP’s, do it. You won’t regret it one bit.
